A Christmas letter for a young child: two sentences can be enough

You want to read a Christmas letter to your young child, but a long journey story may be more than they enjoy. Try a greeting with one familiar detail. A paper envelope and a moment together can be the whole experience.

A parent reads one Christmas letter with a young child beside the tree.

Write one clear idea

Use the name you call your child at home and mention a familiar toy or a paper star they made. Write two simple sentences in the voice of the Christmas character your family knows. The letter does not need a full journey or a task to complete.

Read it aloud yourself first. Simplify unfamiliar words if several need explaining. For a child who cannot read, add a small drawing beside the words. A star you draw yourself is enough.

Read together and leave room to respond

Choose a moment when you can sit together. Let your child open the envelope if they want, then read slowly. If they point at the picture or talk about their toy, follow that conversation. Finishing every sentence is optional.

When they want to return to a game, put the letter aside. Another can wait or never appear. If you mention gifts, follow your actual plans rather than promising presents immediately after the reading.
