A book and a blanket after lunch. Even on Christmas Eve.
There are crumbs on the table, it’s getting dark outside and dinner is still a while away. If your family usually has a quiet break after lunch, keep a place for it between the Christmas letters.
Put the book out before you pick up the phone
Choose something familiar: a favourite story, a blanket on the sofa or a box of pencils. A letter from the journey can introduce the break. After reading it, put the phone away and pick up the book you’ve chosen.
Use a time that fits your normal day. If your child doesn’t sleep, read or draw together for a while. Save the next message for later so you can turn a few pages without checking for another letter.
- Choose a time when you usually take a break.
- Put out a book or pencils, then read the letter.
- Put the phone away and save the next letter for later.
Three ways to take a quiet break
| Idea | How to try it at home |
|---|---|
| Ready to listen | A short book under a blanket. |
| Wants to make something | Draw a place along the journey. |
| Not ready for a break | Skip the message and carry on with what you’re doing. |
“I’ve found a quiet place beyond the woods for a little stop. How about getting cosy and listening to a story?”
Adapt them to the way your family talks.
If lunch runs late, move the message too. There’s no need to interrupt what you’re doing because a letter was scheduled.
