Christmas day & family plans

A book and a blanket after lunch. Even on Christmas Eve

After a visit, cooking and the excitement about gifts, your child may be tired before the evening begins. If a quiet break usually helps, keep room for it today. A familiar book or drawing together is enough.

A child relaxes under a blanket with a book on a quiet Christmas afternoon.

Put familiar things within reach

Choose a favorite book, blanket or pencils. Find a spot outside the route used for hot food and busy visitors. At a relative’s house, ask where you could sit away from the bustle for a while.

Offer something specific: “Shall we read one story here?” or “Would you like to draw with me?” Rest does not have to mean sleep. If your child is content with a game and does not want a break, let it continue.

Give the next transition some room

Say what comes afterward: “We’ll read for a while, then go in for dinner.” Leave time to finish a drawing if the evening allows. If you need to stop, explain before the final page and help put things away.

After a long visit, quiet time may come only at bedtime. You do not need to make up a missed break or offer another activity straight after the book. Adjust the day to the tiredness you can actually see.
