Working on Christmas Day? Make a plan your child can trust
If a parent is on shift, celebrate when you can be together and tell your child what to expect.
If you or your partner is on shift over Christmas, the celebration may need to move. Before making plans with relatives, find one stretch of time you can count on: Christmas Eve evening, after the shift, or Boxing Day. Build the presents and meal around that stretch.
Keep the explanation ordinary
A child does not need to hear that their Christmas is “late”. They need to know who will be with them in the morning and when the other parent will join in. If Father Christmas leaves a stocking while one parent is out, the main gifts can still wait for everyone.
- Pick one small ritual the working parent can do before leaving.
- Ask relatives not to start the big unwrapping without the agreed people.
- Have a backup if the shift overruns.
You might say: “Dad’s working this afternoon. We’ll open the stockings now and save the other presents until he’s home.” A video call is optional; a recording or a note may be gentler when work is unpredictable.
