When a parent works on Christmas Day
A shift may move your family celebration. Tell your child what will happen without tying it to an exact arrival time.
First check the actual shift and travel time home. In a Canadian winter, a late finish can become later on the road. Choose a family moment that still works if the parent is delayed: a stocking at breakfast, supper together, or presents the next day.
Plan a moment together that can move
Santa can leave a small surprise while one parent is away, with family gifts saved for a reunion. Or your household can celebrate on the parent’s day off. Both are easier to explain than repeatedly changing an arrival time during the shift.
- Write down who is caring for the child during each part of the day.
- Tell visiting relatives when the family will open gifts.
- Prepare a quiet shared activity for the parent’s return.
Try: “Mom is working today. We’ll have breakfast with Grandpa, and we’ll open our Christmas presents when she gets home.” If the job has no reliable end time, say “when she’s home” rather than naming an hour.
