Make a Christmas paper chain of small invitations
Put one optional invitation inside each link: a story, a song or a shared drawing. Four links can be a whole decoration, without becoming another calendar.

A paper chain can carry more than color. Before you join each link, add a small invitation on the inside: “Shall we read one page?” or “Would you like to draw with me?” Make just four links to begin with. They are invitations people may choose, rather than tasks to finish on particular December dates.
Write before joining the links
Use ordinary paper you already have. An adult can cut wide strips and help with joining. Try one strip first: curve it into a loop with enough overlap to hold, without folding it sharply. Once that works, prepare three more of the same size.
Let the child choose an invitation for each strip. A drawing of a book, a musical note or two pencils can stand in for words. Keep the proposed activity small enough to explain in one sentence, and make clear who the child wants to invite. Do not promise someone else's time without asking them.
Join four links and choose a place
Close the first loop with a small piece of tape. Pass the next strip through it before closing the second loop, then repeat for the other two. Leave the outside available for decoration and the inside for the invitation. Use tape and any tools with adult help appropriate to the child.
Lay the chain on a shelf or table where everyone can see it. It does not need to hang over a doorway or near a heater. Someone can lift a loop to see the picture, but reading an invitation does not mean they have accepted it.
Open one invitation together
For example, a child points to the two-pencil symbol and asks a parent to draw a tree beside theirs. The parent may accept, suggest a later moment or decline. If they agree, they make that one drawing; the other links can remain unopened. This is a proposed family example, not a promise that every invitation will lead to an activity.
At the end, keep the chain as a decoration or gently open the taped joins and store the strips flat. Choose whether the words still fit before rebuilding it next year. There is no missed day to catch up on: the decoration offered four possibilities, not a holiday timetable.
