Away for Christmas? A simple plan for Father Christmas
A stocking can travel to a cottage or Grandma’s house. The larger presents can wait at home.
Start with the practical question: where will the stocking go? If you are travelling by train or staying in a small room, keep the surprise small. Larger presents can be waiting at home, and that can be part of the story from the start.
Make arrangements with the host
At Grandma’s, find out who uses the sitting room early on Christmas morning. In a hotel, do not count on staff to stage a visit. The adults in your party can place a note or stocking somewhere the child will find it.
- Pack the stocking where a curious child will not empty it while looking for socks.
- Tell hosts whether presents are opened before or after breakfast.
- Have one sentence ready for a delayed journey.
“Father Christmas knows we’re here for Christmas. He’s left something small for this morning; the rest will be at home.” The child needs to know where to look in the morning, not how Father Christmas found the postcode.
