Christmas away from home: Santa, luggage and winter travel
A visit to family is easier when you decide which gifts travel and which can wait at home.
Decide which home will hold the main gifts before the car is packed. If you are driving several hours, leave space for the return trip too. A small stocking at your host’s place and a few presents at home may be more comfortable than moving everything twice.
Plan for an extra night
Winter roads can change your plans. Don’t promise a homecoming time that depends on the weather. If you stay longer with relatives, your child can still have a Christmas morning there, even if the bigger gifts are elsewhere.
- Ask the host where gifts can be hidden and when the room will be free.
- Keep any Santa note in an adult’s bag.
- Tell your child which celebration happens here and which waits at home.
“Santa knows we’re visiting Nana. There will be something here in the morning, and more family gifts when we get home.” If your family celebrates on Christmas Eve, move the same plan to that evening.
