Letters & Christmas stories

How to write a Christmas message: a name and one familiar detail.

A personal Christmas message needs only a name, a familiar detail and something your child can understand. You can write it on paper and read it together.

A parent reads a personal Christmas letter with a child beside the tree.

Choose one familiar detail

Choose one ordinary detail from their world: the star on the window, a drawing on the fridge or a song they like. Mention it directly rather than listing achievements or saying the Christmas visitor has been watching them. The child should recognize the detail without being evaluated.

Add an invitation that fits the moment

Add a small invitation that fits the moment: show a drawing, choose a song or sit together for a story. Make it optional. Gifts should not depend on finishing it, and the message does not need to praise a child for being quiet or obedient.

Read it aloud before sharing

Read your draft aloud before sharing it. If a sentence is hard for you to say, simplify it. Keep private details such as a home address, school or full name out of any public example. The fictional message below uses an invented first name and can be rewritten in the words you use at home.

An invented Santa letter to adapt
“Hello, Emma. Your paper stars have made the window bright. Would you show me which one you like best while you wait for our Christmas surprise?”

A nickname is enough. If you send the letter to someone else, choose a detail your child is comfortable sharing with that person.
