“Is Father Christmas real?” A conversation to have with your child
When a child asks outright, start with what prompted the question and answer in words your family can live with.
“What do you think?” can open a conversation, but it should not become a way of dodging a direct question. Perhaps a friend at school said something, or your child recognised the wrapping paper. Ask what happened and whether they want your honest answer now.
Answer without inventing another explanation
If the child wants the story, talk about the pleasure of giving and about the role Father Christmas plays in your family. If they ask whether you bought the presents, say so gently. You can still keep the stocking, a note and the surprise of Christmas morning.
A possible reply: “The presents come from people who love you. Father Christmas is part of the story we enjoy telling together.” Let the child be cross or sad if that is how they feel. Let them react first. You can talk about what younger siblings know another day.
