When a child asks if Santa is real
When your child asks outright, listen first and answer the question they actually mean.
Pause before answering. “What made you wonder?” tells you whether the child saw a classmate’s comment, spotted a gift bag or simply wants to know what you believe. Those are different conversations. Listen first, then use words you can stand behind.
Let the child set the depth
A child who wants to keep playing may be happy to talk about how your family tells the Santa story. A child asking plainly whether adults buy the gifts may be ready for a plain answer. If they have worked it out, another complicated explanation may make it harder for them to trust you.
You could say: “Santa is a story we use to make Christmas feel special. The giving is real, and people who love you put thought into it.” Another family may frame Santa through faith or a cultural tradition. Choose an answer that fits your household, and make room for disappointment or relief. Give them time to take in the answer before talking about what younger siblings know.
