When your child asks whether Santa is real
A question at school, in the car or after seeing a receipt may call for different answers. Listen before deciding how much to say.
Begin with “What made you ask?” A child who heard a rumour may only need to talk. A child who has put the clues together may be asking for an honest answer. Neither needs a lecture about believing.
Give the family story room to change
You can explain that adults create the surprise and that the generosity behind it is real. Your family may call him Santa or le père Noël. Whatever the name, answer in a way your child can trust.
Try: “We’ve loved making this surprise for you. Santa is a story we share, and the gifts are chosen by people who care about you.” Then stop. Ask how the child feels before offering a role in preparing anything for younger relatives. They do not owe the family a performance or secrecy in exchange for learning the answer.
