Draw a Christmas platform beside your toy train
Use the train itself to size a paper station. Give two picture passengers a waiting area and a separate place to board.

Bring the actual train to the paper
Choose a toy train your child can push by hand, one large sheet, crayons and two broad scrap-paper cards. Draw a different passenger on each card: a face is enough. These flat picture travellers do not need to fit inside a carriage.
Lay the sheet on a clear, flat play surface. If your train uses track, place the paper beside one straight section. Keep it off the rails and out of the wheels' path. For a track-free train, leave a clear strip beside the sheet where it can roll.
Park the whole train alongside the paper. Lightly mark where its front and back line up with the sheet's edge. These marks show how long this station needs to be. Use a larger sheet if the train extends beyond it.
Give waiting and boarding different places
Make the waiting area towards the back of the sheet, farther from the train. Lay both passenger cards there with a little space between them before drawing its outline. Near a stopped carriage, make a separate boarding area large enough for one whole card.
Try the two positions while the outlines are still in pencil. Can one card move from waiting to boarding without covering the railway? Can the train arrive and leave without catching the paper? Move the sheet or redraw a zone if necessary.
Add a small bench picture beside the waiting area and an arrow beside boarding, pointing towards the carriage. Optional words can name the zones. A Christmas star or garland belongs outside these working spaces.
Play one boarding sequence
Put both travellers in waiting and bring the train to a stop with a carriage beside boarding. Choose one traveller. Move that card into the boarding area while the other stays waiting.
Say that this passenger is getting on. Lift the card and hold it beside the carriage as you push the train away with your other hand. An adult can take either job. The card travels in the story without being wedged into the toy or dropped onto its wheels.
At your chosen arrival place, stop and lay the passenger card beside the train. The second traveller can keep waiting until another departure, or you can end here.
Save a layout that works
If another turn is wanted, bring the train back and repeat with the second passenger. You do not need a timetable or a queue of extra travellers.
Keep the two cards with the station sheet. Store the train and track as usual. Next time, check the paper's position again before starting.
Toy-station layout card Use: hand-pushed train, large sheet, two passenger picture cards. Paper: beside track or clear rolling strip, never over wheels/rails. Length: check with the whole actual train. Waiting area: both cards fit with space. Boarding area: one whole card beside a stopped carriage. Dry check: cards can move; train can arrive and leave freely. Symbols: bench beside waiting; arrow beside boarding. Decoration: outside working zones. Start: both travellers wait; train stops beside boarding. Move: one card waits, one goes to boarding. Departure: lift that card; hold beside carriage as the train moves. Arrival: stop, then place traveller beside train. Another turn: optional second departure. Keep: two cards and station sheet together.
