Some children spot a familiar river, town or road straight away. Pause at those places when you look at the map together. “Is he here yet?” might briefly become “Which way will he go next?”
Find one familiar place
Before your first look together, find a town or river along the route that your child knows. Zoom in so they can see it and let them search. You might remember a day out or a drive through the area.
Next time, compare what’s changed. Is the marker before the river or beyond it? Which town is closer to home? If something else catches your child’s eye, explore that part of the map. One shared discovery is enough to start.
- On the first check, find one familiar town or river.
- Switch between the whole journey and the final road section. Show what zooming changes.
- Guess which place the route will pass next, then check your guess when you return.
