A sensory-friendly Christmas morning
If noise, crowds or surprises are hard for your child, let them open gifts at their own pace.
The excitement may start before breakfast: crinkling paper, relatives calling and several new toys all at once. Ask your child which part they enjoy and which part is hard. Use their answer to plan the morning, even if it means opening one gift now and the rest later.
Give the day a visible shape
Draw three simple moments: breakfast, one present, a break. Let the child decide whether to open another gift after the break. Keep a quiet room available and tell visitors that leaving the group is fine. If a surprise is stressful, show the wrapped gift beforehand or describe what kind of item it is.
- Turn music and flashing decorations off before guests arrive.
- Put gifts in small groups instead of one large pile.
- Make a familiar food available even if the holiday meal is different.
“First we’ll eat, then open one present. You can stop whenever you need to.” Follow the child’s cues; the schedule is a support, not another rule to enforce.
