Planning a calmer Christmas morning for a sensory-sensitive child
A simple plan can help when visitors, gifts and unfamiliar sounds all arrive at once.
Ask your child what usually becomes too much: the noise of visitors, the texture of wrapping paper, a new food or not knowing what comes next. Build a short morning plan with familiar stops, such as breakfast, one gift and a break. A visiting relative can follow that plan too.
Let gifts wait
Put packages in another room and bring out a few at a time. If the child prefers to know what a gift is, tell them. A quiet space should be available without needing to explain themselves to every guest. At a big family gathering, decide which adult can step away with them.
- Ask guests to hold off on loud toy demonstrations.
- Keep familiar food and headphones within reach if the child uses them.
- Allow the visit or unwrapping to end early.
“After this gift, we can go to the quiet room. The others will wait.” They can enjoy the day in smaller pieces and still feel part of it.
