When a child asks why Santa gave someone else more
A gift comparison can sting. Help your child feel heard without turning presents into a measure of worth.
A child may be asking about a toy, but they may also be asking whether they are valued. First ask what they heard and what part felt unfair. Do not invent a story about another family’s circumstances.
Talk about your home, not theirs
Some children receive gifts from several relatives; some households keep Christmas small. A Santa story should not make either outcome a verdict on how a child behaved. Explain your own plan in simple terms, without making the child responsible for the family budget.
“I hear that you wanted one like that. Different families give different gifts, and it has nothing to do with who deserves more love.” If they are sad, leave time for sadness. Later you might invite them to choose what to do together with a gift they have, or plan for a future wish if it is realistic. Don’t turn the conversation into a lecture about gratitude.
